Bifurcation

A term popularized by Prigogene and Stengers (1984) referring to a system's transformation from one type to another, for example, from a system with periodic motion to a system in chaos or vice versa. This is to be distinguished from catastrophe, which refers to a seemingly discontinuous change in one system.
